Holistic And Organic Facials in DC (Take Care in Georgetown)
This has been a long awaited blog post because we (clean beauty fanatics in the DC area) have been waiting for Take Care to open a spa since the shop’s birth two-years-ago. The spa at Take Care makes so much sense because everyone who visits Take Care can attest that when you walk in, you want to exhale and spend some time there. The Take Care spa allows you to do just that, but in a deeper more meaningful way through their facials — relaxation combined with high quality skincare.
I have been on this holistic and organic facial journey for about a year now and one thing that I’ve learned is that the relaxation is just as important as the skincare. When getting a treatment such as a facial, I used to have this specific attitude like I don’t care about relaxing just fix my skin. The more I realized how stress was affecting my health and my skin, I understood the importance of stress relief and skincare. My holistic facial journey has brought me to the understanding of needing both relaxation and proper skincare. Take Care does the very best job at this.
Immediately when you walk in the spa room you just BREATH. What an important thing to do in this digital age — breath. The spa rooms are minimalist. How cluttered our lives are and how we crave simplicity e.g. Becoming Minimalist and Marie Kondo. We need to set aside time to get clear and declutter our soul and the minimalist spa rooms allow you to do just that. Also, I have to mention the attention to detail in the spa rooms — gold scalloped light fixtures, natural wheat wreaths, gold accented sleek/minimalist mirrors and sinks, and luxe treatment tables made in the USA.
This is so funny, but the amazing lead esthetician Heather was going through the initial intake and process of the facial with me and I actually started undressing (okay, just boots) as we were chatting. That’s how much I wanted to get on that table and start relaxing. With that said, I won’t hold you up any longer and will go straight to the facial.
Soothing Facial Treatment
After an extensive chat about my skin, Heather chose the soothing facial for me. I was happy that she decided what I needed and took my wants into consideration. The soothing facial is designed to bring calm and balance to the most sensitive and reactive skin and includes Marie Veronique products which I was very interested in trying.
The facial started with few deep breaths — the first facial that I’ve had to implement this. Deep breaths are calming for me so I was pleasantly surprised to have this relaxing entry into the facial. Heather then went into a gentle, but deep cleanse with Marie Veronique oil cleanser without essential oils. I love that Marie Veronique makes a line strictly without essential oils. Heather mentioned that the smells in the essential oil free line are more savory, but I love that! I love essential oils too, but just not crazy about them on my face. And some people with acne can’t use essential oils on the face.
The facial included a series of masks and light massage. My favorite mask was the Micronutrient + Hydromask. I actually had a reaction to one of the MV masks that is used in back bar only and the Micronutrient mask calmed and soothed my skin. The other cool thing about having the reaction (heat feeling on my face and redness) is that Heather knew exactly what to do and handled my skin like the professional she is. Having sensitive and reactive skin can be scary and frustrating especially for the esthetician working with you. I never once felt like Heather was flustered. She troubleshot the experience with me and used products that were soothing on my skin so we could continue. Heather even helped me with the process of elimination in figuring out exactly what I was reacting to. If you’re going to have a reaction to a product, it was the safest place for it. And I should also mention that because Heather took such care in my initial intake, she also told me what a reaction could feel like so we were well prepared. Thank you Heather for handling my sensitive skin with care. If you are sensitive and reactive to products like me, I would definitely book Heather for your initial facial.
The soothing facial ended with another deep cleanse which I loved because it’s so nice to end by starting fresh. Heather then layered the products as if I was entering the day from the morning. On my skin we used Marie Veronique oil cleanser, Pre + Probiotic Daily Mist. Soothing B3 Serum, Barrier Lipid Complex (which I love by the way), and a finishing oil.
Another special touch during the facial was the removal of the hair towel that was protecting my hair from product. Heather gently removed the hair wrap with a Jade comb and soft lifting strokes — this truly felt like heaven in a comb and I almost fell asleep.
As I emerged from my soothing facial and Jade comb trance, I was greeted at the door with a warm chamomile & Lavender tea blend. Heather also had a take-home check-list of the products that work for me which I always find super helpful and it was broken down into morning and night.
To the right or above if on mobile is a photo of me directly post facial. If you have followed my other blog posts, these are raw photos straight from my phone so you can see the real me — no filters. In this photo, I am still a little red from earlier, but my skin is super clear. That night, we went out to dinner with friends and my husbands friend’s wife was raving about my skin. She thought I was going to say I just had Botox. I simply told her it was a little secret — the soothing facial from Take Care.
